The world of penstocks can be confusing, but it can be broken down to a few items
On-Seating: The pressure pushes the door onto the seal
Off-Seating: The pressure pushes door off the seal.
Or does it do both? Bi-direcitonal
Non rising stems: Rotate through a nut in the penstock door. The screwed portion of the stem at the bottom is probably immersed in the water, effluent etc.
Rising stems: Are connected to the penstock door and work through a revolving nut located in the operating gear. The screw thread at the top of the stem is generally not immersed and is readily accessible for maintenance.
Full Frame: used where thrust reaction is accommodated by the penstock frame.
Open Frame: used where thrust reaction is accommodated by the mounting structure.
The environment and budget will generally dictate the material however the following are available:
Stainless Steel 304: the most cost-effective option which has good resistance to environmental and chemical corrosion. Available in all our standard penstocks
Stainless Steel 316: has better resistance to environmental and chemical corrosion. Available across all our standard penstocks upon request.
Super Duplex: has excellent resistance to environmental and chemical corrosion, particularly when hydrogen sulphide is present. Available in our bespoke range when the specification justifies the cost.
Wall Mounted: The penstock is mounted to the wall using mechanical anchors from the frame.
Channel mounted: The penstock Tare fixed into preformed rebates in the sides and inverts of channels by means of a sand/cement non shrink grout.

Channel mounted penstocks are suitable for water, wastewater and flow contril application.
International Penstocks Lab. handstop gates are simple, manually operated valve for small dimensions and low pressures.
Manufactured as standard in HDPE available in sizes from 150 to 700 mm, above which size a penstock is a more appropriate solution.
